The neighbourhood of Ramsay Heights is located in southwest Edmonton. The neighborhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Ramsay Heights is named after Walter Ramsay, who was the first commercial florist in Edmonton. The neighborhood is situated between the North Saskatchewan River and Whitemud Drive and Terwillegar Drive. Most of the homes in Ramsay Heights were built in in the 1970s and 1980s, with a small percentage built between 1947 and 1970. According to the 2005 municipal census, the most common type of home in Ramsay Heights is single family homes, which make up more than 50% of the homes in the neighborhood. A third of the homes in Ramsay Heights are apartments and apartment-style condos, and a tenth of the homes are duplexes. Almost three-quarters of the homes are owner-occupied. In October of 1999, there was a landslide on the Whitemud which destroyed three homes in the neighborhood. Nobody was injured, but the slide did result in a large lawsuit against the City of Edmonton. About 30 homes in the area are still at risk for another landslide, but even with the risk, many of the homes in the neighborhood have been assessed as worth more than $1 million.
